Where it came from
The Desert Lightning set, numbered 70622-1, was released in 2017 as part of the LEGO Ninjago theme's 'Hands of Time' subtheme. It was designed to capture the high-stakes, action-oriented aesthetic of the Ninjago television series, specifically focusing on the character Jay Walker's motorcycle. The set was created to provide a mid-sized build experience that emphasized the show's transition into themes of time manipulation and elemental conflict, featuring both a vehicle build and two primary minifigures.
The design of the Desert Lightning draws inspiration from futuristic and desert-terrain motorcycle concepts, incorporating vibrant blue and gold color schemes characteristic of Jay's elemental affinity for lightning. It was intended to showcase functional play features, such as the firing stud shooters and the ability to detach the rear section of the vehicle. Upon its release, it was well-received by the LEGO community as an accessible entry-level set that successfully translated complex animation designs into a recognizable and sturdy brick-built form.
