Where it came from
The Discowboy was released in 2021 as part of the LEGO Vidiyo series, an experimental theme centered around creating short, augmented reality music videos using a dedicated mobile app. This character represents the 'BeatBox' sub-line, which featured portable cases containing a minifigure, a set of printed tiles called BeatBits, and a baseplate meant to serve as a stage for digital integration.
The design of the Discowboy leans into a surreal, campy aesthetic, pairing traditional western attire with vibrant, disco-inspired color palettes and accessories. It was conceptualized to appeal to children interested in music and digital creativity, though the broader Vidiyo line faced mixed reception due to its reliance on a separate app ecosystem and a limited focus on traditional building play, ultimately leading to the discontinuation of the theme shortly after its launch.
