Where it came from
The Diver and Shark set, designated 2871-1, was released in 1999 as part of a specialized series of small-scale LEGO promotional sets. These sets were often distributed through specific retail partnerships or as budget-friendly impulse buys, reflecting the company's strategy at the time to diversify its product reach beyond traditional themed lines by offering focused, narrative-driven vignettes.
The design of the set focuses on a minimalist aquatic scene featuring a scuba diver and a shark, utilizing a limited brick count to convey a high level of playability. The model emphasizes the core aesthetic of the late-nineties design language, which favored simple color palettes and functional character interaction. It was received as a straightforward, accessible entry point for younger builders interested in maritime themes.
