Where it came from
Released in 2022 as part of the LEGO Super Mario expansion set line, Dorrie’s Beachfront was designed to broaden the interactive play experience of the franchise's digital figure ecosystem. The set captures the coastal aesthetic of the Super Mario universe, centered around the friendly sea creature Dorrie, a character who first gained prominence in the Nintendo 64 title Super Mario 64. The design reflects the modular, brick-built approach of the theme, prioritizing tactile play and digital integration through specialized barcodes that allow the Mario, Luigi, or Peach figures to trigger unique sounds and reactions.
The development of this set was part of a multi-year partnership between the LEGO Group and Nintendo, intended to bridge the gap between traditional construction toys and modern video game mechanics. By including iconic elements like the beach setting, a Cheep Cheep, and a hermit crab, the designers aimed to replicate the platforming challenges found in the source material. Upon its release, it was received as a accessible addition for younger fans, lauded for its ability to integrate seamlessly with the larger Super Mario starter courses while maintaining the charm of its source material.
