Where it came from
The Gungan Sub, released as set 9499 in 2012, was designed as a refreshed iteration of the vehicle first introduced in the 1999 film Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Produced to coincide with the 3D theatrical re-release of the film, this LEGO model sought to provide a more accurate and detailed representation of the Bongo sub than its predecessor, incorporating improved structural techniques to capture the vehicle's unique, organic bulbous aesthetic.
The set is particularly notable among collectors for its inclusion of the Queen Amidala minifigure, which remains one of the most sought-after Star Wars character designs due to the intricate printing on her dress and the specific headpiece mold. The design team focused on maintaining the vessel's distinct silhouette while integrating functional features like opening cockpits and internal cargo bays, ultimately receiving praise from the fan community for its faithfulness to the source material's underwater-faring craft.
