Where it came from
Released by the LEGO Group in 2012 as part of the Star Wars theme, set 9516 Jabba's Palace was designed to capture the iconic opening sequence of Return of the Jedi. It was produced during a period when LEGO was heavily focused on recreating complex cinematic environments, offering a modular build that allowed the palace tower to detach and the main gate to slide open, reflecting the intricate layout of Jabba the Hutt's throne room.
The set is particularly notable among collectors for its inclusion of a diverse array of minifigures, including a unique Jabba the Hutt figure and several fan-favorite alien characters. While the design was praised for its aesthetic accuracy and interactive features, it eventually drew controversy from representatives of the Turkish Cultural Community in Austria, who argued that the building design resembled the Hagia Sophia mosque, leading the LEGO Group to eventually retire the set ahead of schedule in 2013.
