Where it came from
Released in 2003 as part of the early Harry Potter product line, the Knockturn Alley set captures the dark, labyrinthine shopping district favored by witches and wizards practicing the Dark Arts. The set was designed to complement the larger Diagon Alley series, providing fans with a more ominous counterpart to the bustling magical high street. It arrived during a period when the toy manufacturer was heavily focused on translating key architectural locations from the film series into playable, modular environments.
The design of the set focuses on the secretive atmosphere of the location, featuring Borgin and Burkes and its collection of dark artifacts, such as the Hand of Glory and the Vanishing Cabinet. Designers utilized a color palette of dark grays and blacks to contrast with the brighter, more inviting aesthetics of Diagon Alley. Upon its release, it was received as a niche addition to the theme, appreciated by collectors for its unique subject matter and the inclusion of exclusive minifigures like Lucius Malfoy, which helped solidify its place as a standout piece of early 2000s set design.
