Where it came from
LEGO Friends, introduced in 2012, marked a significant strategic pivot for The LEGO Group, representing the company's most substantial effort to capture a larger share of the girls' toy market. The line moved away from the traditional, monochromatic minifigure in favor of the 'mini-doll' figure, which featured more realistic proportions and detailed facial printing. The launch followed years of internal research into the play patterns of young girls, specifically identifying a preference for character-driven narrative play and detailed interior environments within the Heartlake City setting.
The design of the theme, including sets like the early 6032459-1 release, focused on pastel color palettes and modular, open-sided buildings that allowed for easier access during play. While the initial introduction sparked debate among some legacy fans regarding the departure from the classic minifigure aesthetic, the line became a commercial success and a mainstay of the LEGO portfolio. The theme’s focus on distinct personality traits for the five core characters helped solidify the brand's presence in the global toy industry by emphasizing storytelling and social roleplay.
