LEGO Friends

LEGO Friends set 5707, released in 2012, belongs to the introductory wave of the LEGO Friends line, which marked a strategic shift for the company toward a broader demographic. Developed over four years of ethnographic research, the series aimed to integrate traditional construction play with character-driven narratives, moving away from the more utilitarian aesthetics of the System sets popular at the time. The line introduced the mini-doll figure, a departure from the classic minifigure designed with more realistic proportions and compatible with a new modular building system.

The design of the early Friends sets, including those released under the 5700 series designation, focused on pastel color palettes and domestic environments such as cafes, veterinary clinics, and houses. While the launch was met with some initial criticism regarding gender-segregated marketing, the theme achieved significant commercial success and helped LEGO expand its reach significantly. These sets are remembered for establishing the foundational aesthetic and storytelling mechanics that would define the Friends franchise for over a decade.
