Where it came from
Released in 2010, the LEGO Minifigure Series 2 (set 8684) marked the second installment in a revolutionary strategy for the LEGO Group. Following the successful introduction of the blind-bag concept earlier that year, this series sought to maintain momentum by offering sixteen unique, mystery-packaged characters ranging from a Spartan Warrior to a Disco Dude. This format shifted the consumer experience from purchasing traditional building sets to a collectible-focused model, encouraging fans to trade and hunt for specific figures.
The designs within Series 2 were crafted by the internal LEGO design team, aiming to push the boundaries of what a single minifigure could include in terms of printing, accessories, and molded parts. The creative direction emphasized diverse archetypes, from historical figures to pop culture caricatures, which helped solidify the collectible series as a staple of the LEGO brand. The series was met with significant enthusiasm, quickly becoming a cornerstone for secondary market traders and lifelong fans alike due to the tactile anticipation inherent in the foil bag format.
