Where it came from
The Lloyd Avatar - Arcade Pod (set 71716-1) was released in 2020 as part of the Lego Ninjago 'Prime Empire' wave. Inspired by 1980s retro-gaming culture, the set was designed to mimic a handheld arcade cabinet, reflecting the central narrative arc of the season where the protagonists are transported into a digital video game world. The series aimed to blend traditional brick-building with a vibrant, neon-heavy aesthetic that resonated with the themes of virtual reality and competitive gaming.
The design features a modular, boxy structure that opens to reveal a miniature game-scape, complete with a unique Digi Lloyd minifigure and various character-specific accessories. This set, alongside its counterparts for other characters like Kai and Jay, was received as a novel approach to the typical Ninjago model lineup. It was specifically engineered for portability, serving as a functional container for the minifigure and accessories while capturing the nostalgic visual language of classic coin-operated arcade machines.
