Where it came from
The Sealion set, released under the LEGO Friends theme in 2012, was part of the initial wave that launched this product line. Designed to integrate with the Heartlake City aesthetic, the set focuses on animal rescue and care, a core pillar of the Friends franchise. The theme was developed by the LEGO Group after extensive market research to better engage girls with building sets through detailed narrative-driven scenarios and a distinct color palette.
The design of the Sealion set emphasizes playability and character interaction, featuring a small buildable environment and a specialized animal figure. It was received as a successful entry point for the theme, contributing to the broader commercial pivot the company undertook at the time to diversify its demographic reach. The set reflects the brand's shift toward creating more nuanced, character-centric accessories that complement the larger modular builds within the Heartlake City collection.
