Where it came from
The LEGO Star Wars Magnet Set 851228-1 was released in 2009 as part of a series of promotional and thematic minifigure displays. During this era, the LEGO Group frequently bundled popular licensed characters into small magnetic displays intended for use on refrigerators or metallic surfaces, catering to fans looking for compact, collectible representations of iconic franchises.
The set includes three minifigures—Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and a Rebel Pilot—mounted onto non-removable magnetic plates. The design reflects the aesthetic of the 2009 LEGO Star Wars line, prioritizing character accuracy within the constraints of the minifigure medium. While these sets were initially popular among younger builders and adult collectors for their portability and display utility, the practice of gluing minifigures to the magnets eventually drew criticism from enthusiasts who preferred to use the figures for play or standard building, leading to changes in how these sets were manufactured in later years.
