Where it came from
The Sumo Bro figure is part of the LEGO Super Mario Character Packs Series 6, which was released in early 2023. These blind-bagged minifigures are designed to expand the interactive Super Mario Starter Course sets, providing players with additional enemies to incorporate into their custom-built, battery-powered game levels. The Sumo Bro specifically draws its aesthetic from the character's appearances in various Nintendo titles, translating the bipedal, thunder-summoning turtle into the distinct LEGO aesthetic characterized by bold colors and a unique, brick-compatible build.
The design process for these character packs focuses on balancing the recognizable iconography of the Super Mario universe with the modular nature of the LEGO system. By utilizing specialized molded elements alongside standard system bricks, the designers aimed to preserve the character's personality while ensuring it could be scanned by the interactive LEGO Mario, Luigi, or Peach figures to trigger specific digital audio and visual reactions. The series was generally well-received by fans of the theme for its variety and the inclusion of deeper-cut enemies from the franchise's history.
