Where it came from
Released in 2012 as part of the inaugural wave of the Lego Friends theme, Summer Riding Camp (3185-1) was designed to introduce a more narrative-focused play experience for children. The set represents a significant departure from previous themes, utilizing a new color palette and smaller, more expressive mini-doll figures. It aimed to provide a comprehensive building experience that centered on social scenarios, specifically outdoor activities and animal care, reflecting the brand's shift toward character-driven building sets.
The design of the set focuses on modularity, allowing the stable, dormitory, and classroom sections to be rearranged. It features a high level of detail, including modular jumps, a horse carriage, and various accessories to encourage roleplay. Upon its release, the Lego Friends line was met with both critical success for its innovative design choices and debate regarding its gendered marketing, yet it ultimately became one of the most successful commercial launches in the history of the company.
