Where it came from
The Telekom Race Cyclist, released in 2000 as set 1196-1, was a promotional polybag produced by LEGO. It was created to capitalize on the immense popularity of professional road cycling during the late 1990s and early 2000s, specifically highlighting the sponsorship of Team Telekom. The set features a minifigure equipped with a specialized molded cycling helmet and a bicycle, reflecting the brand's occasional forays into real-world sports partnerships during that era.
The design focused on capturing the iconic magenta and black livery of the Team Telekom kit, which was highly recognizable to cycling fans at the time. While the set was a simple release, it remains a notable piece for sports enthusiasts who collect LEGO memorabilia. Because it was a limited promotional item rather than part of a large, mass-market retail line, it serves as an interesting artifact of LEGO's marketing collaborations with external sports organizations.
