Where it came from
The Telekom Race Cyclists and Winners' Podium, released under set number 1199-1, was a promotional set produced by LEGO for the German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom. It emerged during the height of Jan Ullrich’s popularity in the late 1990s, when the Team Telekom cycling squad became a cultural phenomenon in Germany. The set was designed to capture the excitement of professional road racing, featuring minifigures dressed in the team's iconic magenta and white jerseys.
The design of the set focuses on the simplicity of early promotional polybags, offering a small-scale representation of a podium ceremony. While the construction is rudimentary compared to modern sets, it serves as a distinct piece of corporate branding from an era when LEGO frequently partnered with European sports entities. It was primarily distributed as a promotional item, making it a sought-after relic for both cycling enthusiasts and collectors of unique LEGO collaborations.
