Where it came from
The Crafting Box 2.0, released in 2017 as set number 21135-1, represents the second iteration of LEGO's modular building system within the Minecraft theme. Designed to mirror the sandbox nature of the source material, the set was intended to offer builders greater flexibility by providing a selection of elements that could be reconfigured into multiple distinct models. It emerged during a period when the partnership between the LEGO Group and Mojang had matured, moving beyond specific landscape recreations toward more open-ended, creative play experiences.
The set was conceived by LEGO designers to emphasize the 'crafting' element of Minecraft, focusing on a diverse inventory of bricks that allowed for the construction of a desert, water, or mountain biome. Upon its release, it was well-received by the building community for its utility, as it included a high ratio of versatile parts compared to the more static, scene-specific sets. Its design language remains consistent with the blocky, low-polygon aesthetic that defines the partnership, ensuring compatibility with the broader Minecraft theme.
