Where it came from
The Trade Federation Troop Carrier, released as LEGO set 40686 in 2024, was designed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. This set serves as a modern, miniature-scale homage to the larger 1999 release, echoing the iconic design of the MTT troop transport used during the invasion of Naboo. Its development was part of a broader strategy by the LEGO Group to revisit and modernize classic designs from the earliest days of the Star Wars partnership, specifically targeting adult collectors with nostalgic appeal.
The model was primarily distributed as a promotional gift-with-purchase, intended to sit alongside the larger Ultimate Collector Series releases of the anniversary year. The design captures the utilitarian, bulbous aesthetic of the Trade Federation machinery, utilizing a compact build to maximize display utility. By focusing on the distinctive tan and brown color palette of the Separatist droid army, the designers aimed to provide a concentrated, recognizable recreation of the film’s opening conflict that remains accessible yet detailed enough for dedicated fans.
