Where it came from
The LEGO Iconic Chess Set (40174/40719) was designed as a versatile, dual-purpose product intended to bridge the gap between creative building and classic strategy gaming. Released as part of the company's efforts to expand its lifestyle range, the set offers a functional chessboard alongside a full set of brick-built pieces. It was conceived as an approachable gateway for fans who appreciate the aesthetic of modular design while providing a durable, reusable gaming platform.
The set utilizes a standard, minimalist color palette of black and white to ensure clarity during play, adhering to the traditional aesthetics of the game of chess. By allowing the board itself to be constructed from standard plates and tiles, the design leans into the core LEGO philosophy of tactile assembly. Upon release, it was well-received by the adult fan community for its high utility and clean, shelf-ready appearance, serving as a popular display piece for both board game enthusiasts and collectors.
