Where it came from
The 990-1 Trees and Signs set was introduced in 1971 as a specialized accessory pack intended to enhance the budding LEGO town layouts of the era. Produced during a transitional period for the company, this set provided a modular way for builders to add realistic landscaping and traffic infrastructure, bridging the gap between basic brick building and architectural dioramas.
The design of this set is notable for its use of 'granulated' trees—a specific texture achieved through the manufacturing process of the time—and its inclusion of four standard 2x4 bricks. These elements were designed to be versatile, allowing children to place signs at varying heights or integrate the trees into custom terrain. The set received modest but consistent appreciation for its ability to bring a sense of scale and life to the increasingly complex LEGO street scenes that were becoming popular in the early seventies.
