Where it came from
Vizier of the Anointed was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the desert-inspired plane of Amonkhet, the card depicts a high-ranking priest tasked with overseeing the ritualistic preservation of the worthy dead. The design reflects the set's central themes of ancient Egyptian motifs, dark necromancy, and the encroaching influence of the elder dragon Nicol Bolas, who orchestrated the plane's transformation into a testing ground for his undead army.
The artwork was created by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned illustrator whose work has defined the visual identity of many key Magic characters. Villeneuve utilized a color palette of gold, deep blues, and necrotic greens to capture the intersection of religious pageantry and horror. The card was designed with a mechanical focus on creature searching and graveyard utility, and it became a staple in limited play environments, noted for its ability to filter through a deck to find specific threats, embodying the cold, calculated efficiency of the vizier caste.
