Where it came from
Act of Treason was originally introduced in the Magic 2010 core set, representing a design philosophy that sought to bring more aggressive, temporary control effects to the color red. By allowing a player to steal an opponent's creature for a single turn, the card was intended to create high-impact, swingy moments that fit within red’s chaotic and impulsive color identity. Its recurrence in Magic 2014, marked as card number 125, solidified its place as a staple of limited environments, where it serves as a key tool for pushing damage through an opponent's defensive lines.
The artwork for the Magic 2014 edition was executed by Izzy, who captured the card's theme through a dynamic and visceral depiction of betrayal. The design focuses on the visual manifestation of magical influence, illustrating a character being forcibly coerced into action against their will. This iteration was well-received by players for its balance of flavor and mechanical utility, functioning as a reliable component for drafting archetypes that prioritize speed and aggressive board interaction.
