Where it came from
Act of Treason was originally introduced in the 2010 set Magic 2010, designed as a red sorcery that temporarily gains control of an opponent's creature. The mechanics represent a classic 'threaten' effect, a staple in red's color pie intended to represent impulsive, aggressive, or chaotic influence over an enemy's forces. This specific version was released as part of the 2014 Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning, a product designed to showcase the contrast between aggressive red-white strategies and tactical, reactive blue-white playstyles.
The card features artwork by Kev Walker, a prolific illustrator for the game known for his distinctive, gritty style. Walker’s depiction captures the theme of betrayal through a character subverting an opponent's strength for a singular, decisive attack. Within the context of the Duel Decks series, the inclusion of this card provided players with a powerful tool to swing the momentum of a game, reflecting the 'Speed' deck's philosophy of leveraging the opponent's own resources to secure a quick victory.
