Where it came from
Act of Treason was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2010. Designed as a functional successor to older cards like Threaten, it functions as a sorcery that allows a player to gain control of a target creature until the end of the turn, granting it haste and untapping it. This mechanic, colloquially known as a 'steal effect,' is a staple of the red color identity, intended to provide aggressive players a tool to turn an opponent's own defenses against them during a pivotal turn.
The Masters 25 version of Act of Treason, numbered 118, was released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game. Featuring artwork by Johannes Voss, the card retains its classic tactical utility while being showcased within a curated set intended to represent the history of the game's design. This iteration was generally well-received by players for its inclusion in the Limited environment, where such effects are highly valued for their ability to break board stalls.
