Where it came from
Admiral Brass, Unsinkable was released in 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set, a collection of supplemental decks for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The character serves as the face commander for the Ahoy Mateys deck, which centers on a pirate-themed strategy focused on graveyard recursion. She represents a reimagined, undead version of the original Admiral Beckett Brass character, reflecting the deep-sea, exploratory themes of the Ixalan plane.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a prominent fantasy artist known for his detailed oil paintings. His design emphasizes the Admiral’s spectral, resurrected state, grounding the supernatural elements within the gritty, adventurous aesthetic of the set. Upon release, the card was widely received by players for its efficiency in reviving creatures, making it a cornerstone for pirate-tribal decks in the Commander format.
