Where it came from
Admiral Beckett Brass was introduced as a legendary creature in the Ixalan expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2017. The card depicts a pirate admiral central to the set's narrative, which focuses on a race for a golden city hidden within a lush, mesoamerican-inspired jungle continent. This specific version is a promotional variant, notable for its distinct art style that emphasizes the character's command over the Brazen Coalition, the pirate faction of the Ixalan plane.
The character design reflects the set's swashbuckling aesthetic, blending high-seas fantasy with the vibrant, terrestrial threats of the jungle. Illustrated by artist Greg Staples, the card features a bold composition intended to convey the Admiral's authoritative presence and tactical cunning. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on tribal-themed decks, as its ability allows commanders to steal permanents from opponents, solidifying its reputation as a flavorful and mechanically disruptive force in the game.
