Where it came from
Aegis Angel was released as part of the Magic 2015 core set, a collection intended to provide a foundational experience for players while introducing new mechanical synergies. As a white rare creature, the card features the iconic 'indestructible' keyword, designed to protect other permanents and swing the tide of a game in a control-oriented strategy. It reflects the set's broader goal of balancing accessible power levels with impactful board presence.
The card's striking illustration was provided by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy artist known for his cinematic approach to character design. Briclot focused on a regal, protective aesthetic, utilizing celestial motifs and a glowing, ethereal color palette to emphasize the creature's divine nature. Upon its release, it was well-received by limited format players for its ability to create difficult-to-remove threats, cementing its status as a quintessential piece of Magic 2015's visual and tactical identity.
