Where it came from
Yisan, the Wanderer Bard was introduced in the Magic 2015 Core Set, released in July 2014. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering R&D team, the card was conceptualized as a legendary creature that captures the essence of a traveling storyteller who actively recruits allies to join his performance. It serves as a mechanical engine that allows players to search their library for creatures, rewarding a rhythmic, incremental strategy that mirrors the progression of a musical composition.
The character's aesthetic was brought to life by artist Chase Stone, who depicted Yisan mid-performance, emphasizing his role as an inspirational leader among the inhabitants of the plane. Upon its release, the card garnered significant attention from players in the Commander format, where its ability to tutor for specific silver-bullet creatures made it a popular choice for deck-builders who favor interactive, synergistic gameplay patterns over raw power.
