Provenance

Where it came from

The Aegis Automaton was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the industrial, steam-powered plane of Kaladesh, the card reflects the set's focus on mechanical innovation and the rebellion against the ruling Consulate. As an artifact creature, it embodies the resourcefulness of the plane’s inventors, who utilized aether to animate complex constructs to aid their cause.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Kieran Yanner, who captured the automaton in a mid-motion stance that emphasizes its metallic construction and utility. Yanner’s design leans into the bright, ornate aesthetic of Kaladesh, moving away from the gritty, dark fantasy elements found in other planes. Upon its release, it was recognized as a functional, low-cost utility creature, frequently used by players in limited draft formats for its ability to bounce other creatures back to hand to reset their powerful enter-the-battlefield effects.
