Where it came from
Aerial Assault was released in 2020 as part of the Jumpstart set, a product designed to facilitate quick, accessible games of Magic: The Gathering. The set was created to act as an entry point for new players by allowing them to shuffle two thematic deck packs together to create a cohesive deck, emphasizing ease of play and varied gameplay mechanics. Within the white-aligned 'Flying' deck archetype, this card serves as a thematic removal spell, focusing on the core color philosophy of white magic, which often leans into defensive capabilities and the neutralization of aggressive creatures.
The card features an illustration by Titus Lunter, a frequent contributor to the game's visual identity. Lunter’s design for Aerial Assault captures the kinetic energy of a coordinated mid-air strike, utilizing the sweeping, ethereal aesthetic often associated with white-aligned creatures. The artwork was received as a clear, functional depiction of the card's mechanical intent, providing players with an immediate visual shorthand for the effect of dealing damage to an attacking or blocking creature.
