Aether Flash

Aether Flash was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion, the final set in the Mirage block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was aggressively experimenting with unique board-state modifiers, aiming to punish players for deploying creatures without sufficient preparation. The card reflects the high-fantasy, high-stakes narrative of the Weatherlight saga, where the namesake ship traversed the multiverse under constant threat of ambush.

The artwork was provided by Ron Spencer, a prominent illustrator whose distinct, high-contrast, and often visceral style became a hallmark of the 1990s era of the game.
