Provenance

Where it came from

Guerrilla Tactics was released in June 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to build upon the strategic themes established in the preceding Ice Age block, introducing a focus on card advantage and situational utility. Within the narrative of the game, this card reflects the desperate, unconventional skirmishes characteristic of the conflict between the forces of Lim-Dûl and the allied armies of the ice-bound continent of Terisiare.

The artwork for the original printing was created by artist Drew Tucker, whose distinctive, impressionistic watercolor style became a signature of the game's early aesthetic. Tucker's illustration depicts a chaotic, shadowy ambush, capturing the frantic nature of guerrilla warfare. The card's mechanics, which allow for a punishing effect when discarded by an opponent's spell, were received by players as a clever defensive tool against the hand-disruption strategies that were prevalent in the competitive meta-game of the mid-1990s.
