Where it came from
Released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, this card depicts a pivotal moment in the life of the planeswalker Ajani Goldmane. As a set designed specifically for the Modern format, Modern Horizons 3 focuses on powerful, complex interactions and high-concept storytelling, placing this card within a lineage of specialized supplemental sets that introduce new mechanics and high-tier artistic treatments to the game.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Volkan Baga, who is known for his detailed, classical approach to fantasy composition. By centering the composition on a dramatic confrontation between Ajani and a progenitor god, the design aims to convey the immense stakes and emotional weight of the character’s internal struggle against corruption, a narrative arc that has been a focal point of recent Magic: The Gathering storylines. It was received by the player base as a significant showcase of the set's high-fantasy visual identity.
