Where it came from
The Island card numbered 305 from the Modern Horizons 3 set was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024 as part of a collection designed to introduce powerful, format-warping cards into the Modern environment of Magic: The Gathering. This specific card belongs to a series of full-art basic lands featured in the set, which were crafted to emphasize the ethereal, shifting aesthetic associated with the Eldrazi and the planar themes central to the Modern Horizons narrative.
The visual direction for this land was intended to evoke the otherworldly and atmospheric nature of the set's high-fantasy art style. By utilizing a full-art treatment, the illustrators aimed to create a more immersive experience for players, moving away from traditional frame borders to showcase the environmental storytelling of the setting. It was received as a high-quality contribution to the game's expansive landscape of basic land art, valued by players for its distinct look compared to standard core set offerings.
