Ajani, Nacatl Pariah // Ajani, Nacatl Avenger

Ajani, Nacatl Pariah was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This double-faced card depicts the character Ajani Goldmane during a pivotal moment in his narrative, transforming from a displaced Nacatl warrior into a powerful Planeswalker. The design reflects a modern mechanical approach to traditional character arcs, utilizing a flip-card mechanic to represent the internal and external evolution of the character as he reconciles his heritage with his burgeoning spark.

The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who has become a prominent artist within the game for his dynamic character portraits. The visual direction focuses on the duality of the character, emphasizing the gritty, grounded nature of his Nacatl roots on the front face, transitioning to the idealized, radiant aesthetic of his spark-ignited form on the reverse. Upon release, the card was well-received by the player base for its balanced utility in competitive formats and its thematic resonance with long-time followers of the game’s lore.
