Where it came from
Shadow of the Second Sun was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to introduce powerful, format-defining cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing standard sets, and features a thematic focus on iconic mechanics and narratives from the game's long history. This specific card reflects the set's dedication to high-complexity designs aimed at seasoned players who enjoy intricate board states and resource management.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, whose work for the set leans into the ethereal, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the franchise's plane-hopping lore. The design centers on the mythological concept of a secondary celestial body, aiming to evoke a sense of inevitable transition and mystical power. Upon its release, it was noted by the player community for its unique ability to trigger upkeep steps twice, a design choice that prioritizes strategic depth and rewards players for building decks around synergistic permanent effects.
