Where it came from
Ajani, the Greathearted, first appeared in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion War of the Spark. This specific version is a promotional card, identified by the collector number 184p, which was distributed through specialized channels such as the Planeswalker Deck promotional materials. The set served as a major narrative climax for the game, featuring a massive gathering of Planeswalkers to defend the plane of Ravnica from the schemes of the dragon Nicol Bolas, necessitating a design that emphasized Ajani's role as a healer and protector of the allied forces.
The artwork for this particular iteration was crafted by illustrator Kieran Yanner, who captured the leonin hero in a moment of tranquil resolve amidst the chaos of the set's thematic conflict. The design leans into Ajani's signature color identity of green and white, prioritizing his restorative capabilities and his capacity to bolster creatures. Like many promo iterations from this period, the card utilizes unique frame treatments and foil finishes intended to appeal to collectors seeking distinct aesthetic variations of major story characters.
