Where it came from
Ajani, the Greathearted, collector number 520, was released as part of the Secret Lair series, a specialty line of Magic: The Gathering cards introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This specific card was featured in the 'Prime Slime' drop, a curated collection that highlighted cards with a thematic focus on ooze and biology-inspired mutations, showcasing a distinct artistic departure from traditional fantasy portraiture.
The card was reimagined with artwork by Ricardo Cavolo, a Spanish artist known for his vibrant, folk-art-inspired style characterized by bold outlines and saturated color palettes. In this design, Cavolo transformed the heroic planeswalker Ajani into a stylized, mystical figure, aligning with the aesthetic experimentations typical of the Secret Lair program, which seeks to blend high-profile illustration with mechanical reprints for a dedicated collector audience.
