Where it came from
Ajani, the Greathearted, released in 2019 as part of the War of the Spark expansion, represents a pivotal moment in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Designed as a planeswalker card, it depicts the leonine hero Ajani Goldmane amidst the conflict against Nicol Bolas on the plane of Ravnica. The card mechanics emphasize his role as a protector and healer, utilizing the 'Amass' mechanic's counterpart strategies to bolster board presence and loyalty.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was created by illustrator Chris Rahn, who captured Ajani in a dynamic, heroic stance consistent with his character's established lore. The card was distributed through various promotional channels, including store events, intended to highlight the climactic narrative of the set. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its utility in 'superfriends' style decks, which focus on synergies between multiple planeswalker cards.
