Where it came from
Ajani Unyielding was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the leonin planeswalker Ajani Goldmane during his time in the Kaladesh block, specifically highlighting his role as a mentor and strategist for the Gatewatch. The design reflects his identity as a white-green planeswalker, focusing on card advantage and board stability through his loyalty abilities.
The card illustration was created by artist Aleksi Briclot, a veteran contributor to the game known for his distinctive, painterly style. Briclot intended to capture Ajani's imposing physical presence and his protective, noble demeanor, using a composition that emphasizes his readiness to defend his allies. Upon release, the card was received as a solid mid-range planeswalker, valued by players for its ability to draw cards and stabilize the battlefield in long-form games.
