Where it came from
Ajani's Last Stand was released in July 2018 as part of the Core Set 2019 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This particular version, designated as collector number 4s, was issued as a promotional card, specifically functioning as a Buy-a-Box promo. The card was designed to incentivize players to purchase a full display box of Core Set 2019 boosters from local hobby stores, serving as a tactical reward for supporting brick-and-mortar retail environments.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering community known for his emotive and high-fantasy aesthetic. The design depicts the Planeswalker Ajani Goldmane in a moment of intense thematic gravity, aligning with the set's narrative focus on the origins and struggles of iconic characters. Reception was generally positive among players who appreciated the unique border treatment and the distinct aesthetic contribution Voss provided to the Ajani character arc.
