Where it came from
Ajani, Sleeper Agent was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Dominaria United. The card represents a pivotal narrative moment where the character Ajani Goldmane, a long-standing heroic figure within the game's lore, is revealed to have been captured and corrupted by the antagonistic Phyrexians. This release was central to the broader multi-year Phyrexian arc, serving to shift the emotional stakes for players invested in the franchise's ongoing storytelling.
The card was illustrated by Chris Rahn, an artist well-regarded for his dramatic and technically precise depictions of Planeswalkers. Rahn's design highlights the physical transformation of Ajani, incorporating the distinct biomechanical aesthetics of the Phyrexians while maintaining the character's recognizable silhouette. Upon release, the card was analyzed extensively by the competitive community for its unique mechanical balance, specifically its role as a Phyrexian-mana costed planeswalker that offers a different strategic utility compared to previous iterations of the character.
