Where it came from
Ajani, Sleeper Agent was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria United. The card represents a pivotal narrative moment where the character Ajani Goldmane, a long-standing hero within the multiverse, is revealed to have been secretly compleated by the Phyrexians, serving as a sleeper agent to infiltrate the coalition forces. This development was a significant shock to the community, marking a dark turn for a traditionally benevolent figure.
The card was illustrated by Chris Rahn, who captured Ajani’s corrupted state with subtle, unsettling details that signal his allegiance to New Phyrexia. The design of the card leans into its function as a planeswalker, balancing traditional green and white identity markers with new, aggressive mechanics that reflect his altered nature. Upon release, it was widely discussed for its narrative impact and its aggressive utility in competitive formats, quickly becoming a centerpiece for fans following the Phyrexian story arc.
