Where it came from
Ajani's Presence was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion, the final set in the Theros block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card draws heavily on the Greek mythology-inspired theme of the set, featuring the leonin planeswalker Ajani Goldmane, who plays a central role in the narrative as he attempts to lead the mortal forces against the meddling gods of Nyx.
The card was illustrated by Jason Chan, who employed a dynamic, heroic visual style characteristic of the set's high-fantasy aesthetic. By utilizing the 'Strive' mechanic, the design allows players to pay additional mana to target multiple creatures, mechanically representing Ajani’s ability to lend his protection and strength to his allies. It was received as a versatile utility card within the Limited and Standard environments of the time, appreciated for its ability to save creatures from destruction while simultaneously providing a power boost.
