Ajani's Pridemate

Ajani's Pridemate was first introduced in the Magic: The Gathering core set Magic 2011, designed as an uncommon creature that rewards players for gaining life. The version featured in the 2013 Commander set acts as a functional reprint of this card, intended to integrate into the lifegain-focused strategies prevalent in the white-green preconstructed decks of that era. By providing a scaling threat that grows whenever the player gains life, the card quickly became a staple in casual, kitchen-table play.

The card's original illustration was created by Steve Argyle, who depicted the Leonin warrior with a focused, combat-ready aesthetic. The artwork emphasizes the character's anthropomorphic feline features and connection to the planeswalker Ajani Goldmane. Its reception has remained consistently positive over the years, as the card's simple yet impactful ability makes it a foundational element for players building creature-based decks that rely on synergistic life-total manipulation.
