Alhammarret, High Arbiter

Alhammarret, High Arbiter was released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins, which served as a narrative origin story for five of the game's most iconic Planeswalkers. The card depicts the sphinx mentor of Jace Beleren, a character pivotal to Jace's early development on the plane of Vryn. Designed as a legendary creature, it embodies the sphinx archetype of high-mana control through its ability to manipulate opponents' options and force them to reveal their hands.

The artwork was illustrated by Chase Stone, who aimed to capture the imposing, intellectual, and slightly detached nature of the sphinx as a grand arbiter. The design reflects the character's role as a manipulative master who seeks to control the outcome of conflicts through superior knowledge. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its unique social effect on the game, forcing transparency between opponents and serving as a flavorful representation of the mentor-student dynamic portrayed in the set's broader lore.
