Where it came from
Alhammarret, High Arbiter was released as part of the Magic Origins expansion in 2015, specifically serving as a promotional card. The character is a Sphinx of deep significance to the set's narrative, acting as the mentor to Jace Beleren during his youth on the plane of Vryn. The card was designed to represent the character's role as a powerful telepathic arbiter, utilizing an ability that allows players to look at their opponent's hand and prohibit the casting of specific spells, mirroring his manipulative nature in the storyline.
The artwork for this particular promo version was crafted to emphasize the character's imposing presence and intellectual authority. The visual direction focuses on the intricate, ethereal aesthetic common to Sphinxes in Magic: The Gathering, utilizing cool, sharp tones to evoke a sense of calculated strategy. Upon its debut, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set, particularly appreciated by players who enjoy control-oriented gameplay and those invested in the deeper lore of the multiverse.
