Where it came from
Alliance of Arms was released in 2011 as part of the inaugural Commander product line, a series of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the popular multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format. It appeared in the 'Political Puppets' deck, which focused on group-hug mechanics and incentivizing table-wide interaction, embodying the set's goal of fostering social, non-linear gameplay between four players.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a painterly, dramatic style to capture the visual concept of a spontaneous mass mobilization. The design was intended to create a communal effect where every player receives soldiers, reflecting the 'political' theme of the deck by forcing players to weigh the benefit of gaining creatures against the risk of bolstering their opponents.
