Where it came from
The Conundrum Sphinx was released in 2011 as part of the initial Commander set, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to support the increasingly popular community-created 'Elder Dragon Highlander' format. The card appeared in the Heavenly Inferno deck, which utilized a blue, white, and black color identity to focus on high-impact creatures and graveyard interaction. Its inclusion served to provide card advantage through its unique ability to manipulate the top of the library, fitting the thematic archetype of a celestial oracle.
The card was illustrated by Terese Nielsen, a prominent artist within the Magic: The Gathering community known for her ethereal and textured style. Nielsen designed the Sphinx to evoke a sense of ancient intelligence and mystery, utilizing deep blues and stark highlights to distinguish the figure against its background. Upon release, the card was received as a solid utility creature for blue-aligned decks, praised for its ability to filter card draw while providing a substantial flying threat that could pressure opponents during the mid-to-late game.
